Steven Ariong, Karamoja – Uganda is today shining and being admired worldwide due to its rapid infrastructure development and growing business sector.
All of this is thanks to the bravery and commitment of multinational companies that have promoted Uganda’s image across the continent.
Among these pioneers was the late Hajji Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige (BMK), who was the first businessman in the country to establish a business empire across the continent, along with many others.
However, it is unfortunate that his passing is putting his efforts at risk. His empire is now threatened with being seized due to relatively small loans that could be resolved in a respectful manner.
Joel Locuge, one of the traders in Moroto and a concerned citizen, has appealed to President Museveni to intervene in this matter, just as he has supported other businesspeople, such as Mr. Patrick Bitature. “Please, Mr. President, the late Kibirige was your close friend. I request you to save his empire from being disorganized so that it continues serving and generating taxes for our country,” he said.
It should be noted that every week, there are stories about BMK, which have turned the name of a once-respected tycoon into a subject of ridicule. Simon Okoed, another concerned citizen, said that the Shs 10 billion being demanded by banking institutions can be resolved, thereby saving the empire.
BMK has made significant contributions to development in Karamoja, including the establishment of the first multibillion-shilling hotel, a branch of Hotel Africana, in Moroto.
This development has significantly improved the beauty of Moroto municipality. Many Karimojong children have been employed at this hotel, and others have been sponsored to pursue different courses.
