Police at Katwe station are investigating a heartbreaking incident involving the death of six-year-old Joan Muyanja, a pupil at Savannah Kindergarten and Daycare Center in Makindye. The child succumbed to head injuries allegedly caused by reckless driving by her school van driver, who is now in custody.

According to reports, the driver was speeding excessively while transporting students on Tuesday, causing Joan to hit her head on a metal pipe inside the vehicle. The impact reportedly left her unconscious, and she was rushed to Kiruddu Hospital, where medics pronounced her dead on arrival. Witnesses claim the van had been moving erratically before the incident.

Authorities confirmed the driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, faces potential charges of reckless driving and negligence leading to death. “We are deeply saddened by this avoidable tragedy. The driver’s actions endangered lives, and we will ensure accountability,” stated a Katwe police spokesperson.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and local residents, with many demanding stricter safety measures for school transport. Savannah Kindergarten has temporarily suspended its transportation services, pledging cooperation with the investigation.

Community leaders are urging schools to inspect vehicles for internal hazards, such as exposed pipes or sharp edges, and enforce speed limits. Joan’s family described her as a “bright, joyful child,” devastated by the loss.

As investigations continue, questions linger about oversight of school transport operators. Police emphasized the case underscores the need for vigilance to protect vulnerable passengers. Joan’s funeral arrangements are underway, as Makindye mourns a young life cut short.
