Christopher Okello Onyum, a Ugandan-American national, has come into public attention following his conviction in connection with the killing of four children at a daycare centre in Ggaba, a suburb of Kampala.
The prime suspect in the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme (daycare) murder, Christopher Okello Onyum, was found guilty of killing four kids.
On 2 April 2026, Okello Onyum sparked a somber atmosphere countrywide after he reportedly stormed the Gaba Early Childhood Development Programme, where he killed four children by stabbing. The incident caused widespread shock and grief across Uganda.
Okello was immediately saved from mob justice and detained at a police station before being arraigned before the court to face the consequences of his actions.
Following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive, the public trial was held at the Ggaba Community Church grounds to allow the local community to witness the proceedings.
Onyum was born on 23 June 1987 in Kitwe, Zambia, to Ugandan parents. His mother is reported to originate from Kumi District in eastern Uganda, while his father comes from Kwania District in northern Uganda. He is understood to have lived in several countries during his lifetime, including Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, and the United States.
He holds dual Ugandan and American citizenship, according to court records and reports. However, before the criminal case, there was limited publicly available information about his professional background, business activities, or personal life in Uganda or abroad.
Reports presented during proceedings suggested that he had recently returned to Uganda and had expressed interest in agricultural work, although this has not been independently verified. No official records confirming his income or net worth have been made public.

In due course, several court sessions were held, during which key evidence was presented. This included traffic surveillance footage, among other forensic materials, which the prosecution said linked the accused to the incident.
Yesterday, 30 April 2026, a High Court judgment session was held, presided over by Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha. During the session, Christopher Okello Onyum was found guilty of the charges against him and sentenced to death.
The case has drawn significant national attention and sparked wider discussions on child protection, mental health considerations in criminal justice, and community safety in Uganda.
