Uganda’s Parliamentary Speaker Anita Among has been thrust into the spotlight after AI chatbot Grok singled her out as the “most corrupt MP” in a recent response. While the claim lacks formal legal validation, it has reignited scrutiny of Among’s controversial tenure.
An X user took to the social media platform and asked the Chatbot who the most corrupt legislator is. And without hesitation, it named the Bukedea Woman MP.
Among, a key ally of President Yoweri Museveni, has faced multiple allegations. The most infamous is her alleged role in the **“iron sheets scandal”** (2023), where officials diverted thousands of metal roofing sheets meant for a *low-income housing project* into private hands. Critics accused Among of benefiting, though she denied wrongdoing.
She has also been criticized for **Parliament’s lavish spending**, including $2.8 million on luxury vehicles for MPs amid a cost-of-living crisis, and $48 million allocated to renovate her office and lawmakers’ residences. Opposition MPs called this a misuse of public funds.
In 2023, a censure motion accused Among of **abuse of office and financial misconduct**, citing opaque contracts and irregular appointments. The motion was blocked by pro-government MPs, fueling claims of a cover-up.
More recently, Among proposed banning social media criticism of leaders after facing backlash online. Critics labeled this an attempt to stifle accountability.
While Among dismisses allegations as “politically motivated,” activists argue her case reflects Uganda’s broader governance challenges. Transparency International ranks Uganda among East Africa’s most corrupt nations.
As public frustration grows, the scandals surrounding Among highlight deepening distrust in Uganda’s leadership—and the uphill battle for accountability.
