Bukedea, Uganda — A group of youth across the Teso region have warned the elders in Teso not to interfere with the ongoing corruption probe involving Anita Among.
The disappointed youth, led by Ignatious Oluke, made the remarks after reading the elders’ message in the media pleading with President Museveni to intervene in the issues of corruption allegations against Among.
The youth are angered by the May 28 statement issued under the banner of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), where the elders expressed support for accountability and the work of state agencies but cautioned against what they described as growing political pressure and public condemnation before the conclusion of investigations.
The statement, signed by Mr. Alloch William Akoll, a senior advisor on ICU affairs, called on investigators to uphold the rule of law, transparency, and the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence.
However, the youth have interpreted this as an attempt by Mr. Alloch and his team to interfere with the ongoing investigations.
“Mr. President, it’s us, your Bazukulu, saying don’t listen to these elders. Let Among face it rough; we are tired of corrupt officials being pardoned after embezzling funds meant to transform the already poor society,” said Jackson Ojakol.
According to Ojakol, the ICU elders should concentrate on how to build the institution rather than shifting their concerns to Among’s saga, unless they have been eating the loot together with Among.
Priscilla Among, another youth, said it would be a shame for the President not to send Among to prison first, as he did with other corrupt ministers.
“Mr. President, let Among first go to prison. You jailed Maj. Gen. Muhoozi, you jailed Minister Baryomunsi, you jailed former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya, you jailed Minister Henry Tumukunde, Agnes Nandutu, Kitutu, and many others. So there should be no special treatment for Among. Let her first go to prison and learn,” she said.
Martin Omoding, another youth, said that when Among finishes her jail term, she should also be banned from occupying public office for 30 years so that others will desist from stealing public funds.
