President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor of the Bank of Uganda (BoU), with Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba appointed as the Deputy Governor.

Dr. Atingi-Ego, 60, had been serving as the Deputy Governor since March 2020. He has been acting as the Governor since the passing of the late Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, who passed away in January 2022. Prior to his tenure at the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Atingi-Ego served as the Executive Director of the Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI), based in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Prof. Nuwagaba, a renowned economist and expert in economic transformation, will take on the role of Deputy Governor, bringing his extensive expertise to the leadership of the central bank.

While the appointment has been widely circulated on social media, it has not yet been officially confirmed by sources at the Presidency.

As of the time of writing, the Central Bank, State House, and the President have yet to issue an official statement regarding the appointments.

Additionally, the Presidential Press Unit, the official media arm of the President, was contacted for a comment but did not provide a confirmation or denial.

The appointment of Atingi-Ego and Nuwagaba comes after a lengthy period of uncertainty about the leadership of the central bank, which many economists have argued is crucial for the country’s economic stability.
