Honorable Kyofatogabye, the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, has called for the immediate resignation of Kampala City’s Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.
The minister accused Lukwago of neglecting his official duties and spending most of his time involved in activism at Katonga, leaving the city’s affairs unattended.
Kyofatogabye claimed that Lukwago only visits his office to collect fuel and allowances, rather than dedicating time to solving the city’s problems.
He said, “Ninety percent of Lukwago’s time is spent on activism in Katonga. He comes to pick up fuel and allowances and then drives back to Katonga. If only the Lord Mayor could spend just one week—five days—focused on his duties, perhaps he would accomplish a lot more.”
The minister also addressed the ongoing garbage crisis in Kampala, pointing out that the city has been struggling with waste management for two years.
He criticized the Executive Director of KCCA Dorothy Kisaka who was fired yesterday over the same concern, for not taking the issue seriously earlier, stating that the public is only now noticing the problem due to the Kiteezi landfill crisis.
He remarked, “We have been grappling with the rubbish issue for the last two years. Each time, the executive director needed reminding about why the garbage was not being collected.”
Kyofatogabye further expressed surprise at how Lukwago can continue in his role despite the issues facing the city.
He suggested that Lukwago should be thankful to his team for helping maintain his image despite his failings. “Lukwago should actually be the first person to resign as the Lord Mayor.
I wonder where he finds the audacity to walk around with his head held high amidst all this chaos in the city,” he added.
The minister’s comments came in response to questions regarding whether the Kiteezi crisis was severe enough to justify the removal of KCCA officials, including the executive director, Dorothy Kisaka.
