Mpuuga Rejects NUP’s Resignation Demand

Friday, March 1, 2024

Amidst mounting pressure from his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga has adamantly refused to heed what he termed “a cowardly call” for his resignation as a parliamentary commissioner. Mpuuga issued a statement on Friday, March 1, vehemently rejecting the allegations of corruption and abuse of office levied against him by the NUP.

In his statement, Mpuuga asserted that he categorically declined the call for resignation, citing it as motivated by spite, envy, and deliberate misrepresentation. As a prominent figure within NUP, serving as the deputy president for the Buganda region and formerly holding the position of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Mpuuga condemned what he described as internal intrigue and machinations within the party.

Throughout the tumultuous period, Mpuuga maintained his commitment to serving above self, adhering to his creed of prioritizing the interests of the people. Despite facing challenges and internal conflicts within NUP, Mpuuga affirmed his unwavering dedication to the party’s core values and principles.

Addressing the purported document attributed to the party calling for his resignation, Mpuuga emphasized his loyalty to NUP’s fundamental ideals, expressing his willingness to educate and guide fellow party members on matters of institutional integrity and governance. He underscored the importance of understanding the roles and responsibilities of the parliamentary commission, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in all decisions.

Mpuuga defended the actions of the parliamentary commission, asserting that every decision regarding payments and rewards undergoes rigorous scrutiny and evaluation by relevant parliamentary committees. Dismissing accusations of corruption as baseless and unfounded, Mpuuga argued that such allegations were fueled by malicious intent and political opportunism.

Acknowledging the right of the public to question the decisions of their leaders, Mpuuga cautioned against exploitation by individuals seeking to undermine and smear others for their own gain. He denounced the ongoing campaign to tarnish his reputation, attributing it to orchestrated efforts aimed at discrediting him within NUP.

Undeterred by the attacks on his character, Mpuuga affirmed his readiness to confront any challenges in order to uphold integrity and common sense in politics. He reiterated his commitment to assisting NUP in addressing corruption within its ranks and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.
