President Museveni emphasized the need for sustainable utilization of Busoga’s natural resources, stating that proper management could significantly enhance the region’s prosperity.

During the 43rd Tare Sita celebrations in Bugweri district, Busoga region, on Tuesday, February 6, President Museveni highlighted the mismanagement of swamps, which are currently being used for rice and sugarcane cultivation. He expressed concern that this practice, while generating income, is unsustainable and harmful to the environment.

Museveni urged for a shift towards more sustainable agricultural practices, promising to provide modern methods to help locals derive livelihoods from agriculture without compromising environmental integrity. He cited successful initiatives in Eastern Uganda, where agricultural activities were relocated to the fringes of wetlands, allowing for wetland restoration and improved environmental conditions.

“Tarehe Sita,” Swahili for the sixth day, commemorates February 6, 1981, the day when the struggle against the government resulting from the disputed 1980 elections commenced with an attack on Kabamba Military Barracks.

This year’s celebration, held under the theme “Celebrating the Peoples’ Struggle for Unity, Security, and Peace for Socio-Economic Transformation,” was attended by over 17 members of the cabinet, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Minister of East African Affairs Rebecca Kadaga, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, Defence Minister Bamulangaki Ssempijja, and Security Minister Maj. Gen Jim Muhwezi.
