Museveni Praises Nakivubo Stadium Refurbishment

President Yoweri Museveni, on Thursday, led the commissioning of the newly refurbished Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium in downtown Kampala. The project, spearheaded by businessman Hamis Kiggundu, marks a significant step in Uganda’s sports infrastructure development. During the ceremony, President Museveni outlined the government’s plans to further enhance sports facilities across the country.

In his address, President Museveni commended Hamis Kiggundu for his innovative approach and dedication to transforming Nakivubo Stadium. He highlighted Kiggundu’s role in utilizing private resources to refurbish the stadium, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships in national development.




Museveni acknowledged Kiggundu’s clear vision and determination in proposing a lease agreement for Nakivubo Stadium, allowing private investment for its redevelopment. He emphasized the government’s willingness to support initiatives that drive economic growth and improve infrastructure, stressing the importance of efficient decision-making in fostering development.




The President underscored the need for private sector involvement in national development projects, citing Kiggundu’s successful venture as a model for future partnerships. He expressed satisfaction with the stadium’s facilities, affirming their compliance with international standards and their potential to boost economic activities in the area.




Museveni also revealed the government’s plans to establish additional sports facilities, including zonal stadiums in various regions. He emphasized the importance of decentralizing sports infrastructure to promote accessibility and youth participation across the country.

During the event, apologies were conveyed from First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, who commended Kiggundu’s contribution to sports infrastructure development during her previous visit to the stadium. The partnership between the government and the private sector was lauded as a testament to the National Resistance Movement’s commitment to national development.

Sports state minister Ogwang expressed gratitude towards Kiggundu for his role in enhancing sports infrastructure, noting the government’s ongoing investments in the sector. He provided updates on the renovation progress at Namboole Stadium, highlighting its imminent completion and upcoming commissioning.




In his remarks, Hamis Kiggundu thanked President Museveni for his support and emphasized the collective responsibility of Ugandans in driving development initiatives. He attributed the success of the Nakivubo project to conducive conditions created by the government and encouraged others to emulate his efforts in nation-building.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including government officials and local leaders, underscoring the collaborative efforts towards advancing sports infrastructure and fostering national development.
