We are creating babies in a generation that does not appreciate, celebrate, or reward people for being and doing good. The moral rightness of people’s conduct is now attributed to those with unconventional behavior. The current generation castigates those who call out others for common wrongs and has lost a guilt conscience because there is no longer belief in a single straight path we all ought to follow. They claim to be woke.
Gen Z is very woke and understands the essence of being alive. To them, life is a chance to be different, to correct the “mistakes” of God. They will reshape their noses and lips, change their eye color, gender, skin color, and make other modifications they desire. Despite advancements in technology and the ease of life it brings, Gen Z struggles to find lasting satisfaction and purpose. We wonder what kind of grandparents they will be.
In a generation where machines do much of the thinking for humans, Millennials and Gen Z rely on the wisdom of earlier generations, particularly Generation X and those before. While Millennials and Gen Z have had inventors, their discoveries have had little lasting impact or recognition. When discussing the greatest people in history, we still think of individuals like Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and others from preceding generations. Everything builds upon their efforts and sacrifices.
“Meme captions like ‘Men used to go to war’ are popular these days, often accompanied by videos and photos of men posing in femininity. This generation defends such expressions with national constitutions and human rights charters that grant them the right to choose everything, even behaviors that may seem trivial or contrary to traditional gender roles. However, we should not defend such behaviors, whether out of love for God’s prescriptions or respect for the standards set by previous generations.
I am addressing Millennial parents and the earliest members of Gen Z who are or will soon be parents. Our task is daunting, and while I’m not a pessimist, I’m more of a realist than an optimist. We must acknowledge that we cannot override the rapid changes in the world, especially those driven by technology, which hinder children’s ability to think for themselves, reflect, learn, and unlearn through experience.
Life is inherently practical, as our grandparents believed. They allowed children to learn from mistakes, understanding that failure is essential for growth and wisdom. However, Gen Z, with its reliance on artificial intelligence, leaves no room for error. The learning curve has flattened, depriving future generations of the wisdom gained from making mistakes. This lack of humility contributes to the current state of civilization, where everyone believes they are right and dismisses opposing views without consideration.
Tough love shaped previous generations, instilling societal standards and expectations. However, Millennials and Gen Z reject these standards, considering them outdated and restrictive. They claim to be woke, implying that previous generations were naive and ignorant. Yet, these standards served a purpose, fostering stability and satisfaction in life. Today’s disregard for tradition and societal norms may lead to unforeseen consequences.
As young parents, we bear the responsibility of instilling values and character in our children. Beliefs, character, and morals are best developed in childhood, as Proverbs 22:6 suggests. We must impart virtues such as endurance, courage, honesty, and humility, and teach them about the spiritual world and nature’s importance. We must allow them to make mistakes and learn from them, disciplining them when necessary to cultivate a sense of responsibility and service.
We are raising children in an era of excessive multimedia consumption, where regulating their exposure to content is challenging. While they may stray from our teachings, if we’ve instilled strong values in them, they will eventually find their way back. By attending to our children’s upbringing with love and discipline, we ensure they become individuals of value and purpose in society.
