As the eagerly anticipated Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit approaches, women in agribusiness are gearing up to engage with experts in the sector and share their experiences. The summit, scheduled to take place in Uganda from January 15-20, 2024, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, will bring together heads of state and ministers from over 130 countries. Under the theme “Deepening Co-operation for Shared Global Affluence,” the summit aims to foster collaboration and prosperity.
A noteworthy side event during the summit is the Source of the Nile Women in Agribusiness Summit, jointly organized by the agriculture ministry, UN Women, and the NAM Secretariat. In this session, women leaders in agribusiness will have the opportunity to share their success stories, providing inspiration to others, and propose policy recommendations to enhance the thriving of women in the agribusiness space.
Uganda, where approximately 70% of the land is dedicated to farming, holds a strategic advantage in ensuring ample food production for food security, economic stability, and self-sufficiency. The Source of the Nile Women in Agribusiness Summit aligns with the broader goal of empowering women in the agricultural sector, recognizing their vital role in the nation’s food production and economic development.
The summit’s program includes a ministerial conference on January 17 and 18, culminating in a heads of state meeting on January 19-20, with the summit officially concluding on the 21st. President Yoweri Museveni highlighted in an earlier interview that Uganda’s selection as the host for the summit was attributed to its neutral stance on international issues.
Beyond diplomatic significance, the summit is poised to showcase Uganda as a premier tourism destination, further enhancing the country’s global standing. As part of the summit’s activities, the Private Sector Foundation of Uganda will present numerous business and investment opportunities to delegates, contributing to the promotion of economic growth and collaboration.
