Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Limited, a Ugandan pharmaceutical company, has commenced the production of diabetes medications. The National Drug Authority (NDA) has granted approval for the production of a new oral diabetes drug, Flozicard XR. This initiative has the potential to significantly impact the health and well-being of diabetes patients in Uganda.

Dr. William Lumu, President of the Uganda Diabetes Association, has urged the drug manufacturer to make these medicines available at affordable prices, ensuring accessibility for many Ugandans. Currently, similar imported medications are priced at approximately UGX 10,000.

Amos Atumanya, a senior drug inspector at the NDA, confirmed that the Flozicard XR medication met all the necessary requirements for approval. The NDA’s primary objective is to ensure the availability of safe, effective, and high-quality medicines for the Ugandan population. The local production of these medications strengthens the NDA’s ability to guarantee product quality and enhance accessibility.

This development marks a positive step towards self-sufficiency in medication production and improved healthcare for diabetes patients in Uganda.
