The National Unity Platform (NUP) led by President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has distanced itself from remarks made by Ali Kateregga, a NUP Councilor from Masaka. Kateregga’s plea to President Yoweri Museveni for the release of jailed NUP supporters has been disavowed by the party.
During the swearing-in ceremony of new ministers at State House, Kateregga, donning the signature NUP red beret, appealed to President Museveni for the release of NUP supporters detained during the 2021 general elections. He suggested that these supporters were misled by politicians with personal agendas and emphasized that their release would be a significant Eid gift to the nation.
President Museveni responded by indicating that the matter would be reviewed, particularly for supporters not charged with capital offenses such as murder.
However, Bobi Wine, addressing party supporters at the NUP Headquarters in Makerere Kavule during belated Women’s Day celebrations, publicly denounced Kateregga’s actions, asserting that they do not align with the party’s principles. Kyagulanyi emphasized that NUP would not compromise on fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution through negotiations with the government.
This is not the first instance where Bobi Wine has declined negotiations with the government regarding detained NUP members. Previously, he rejected similar requests, including those from MP Dr. Abed Bwanika, to negotiate the release of detained NUP members.
Moreover, Kyagulanyi urged NUP Women leaders to actively pursue elective positions while maintaining integrity and avoiding involvement in corrupt practices. His wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, encouraged women to demonstrate their leadership capabilities and advocate for top positions in government.
Dr. Lina Zedriga, the NUP Deputy President for the Northern region, commended Bobi Wine for fostering inclusivity within the party, citing her recent appointment as acting President during Kyagulanyi’s absence from the country.
