NUP Leadership Shift: Ssenyonyi Takes Over as LOP

Friday, December 29, 2023

At the National Unity Platform’s headquarters in Kampala, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the President of the party, revealed a reshuffling of key positions. Joel Ssenyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa West, is now appointed as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), succeeding Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba. Kyagulanyi emphasized that this change does not reflect a demotion for Mpuuga but aligns with the party’s commitment to evolving leadership.

Expressing gratitude for Mpuuga’s dedication and resilience during challenging times, Kyagulanyi acknowledged his leadership contributions. Mpuuga, now appointed as a Commissioner of Parliament, replaces Francis Zaake as the Commissioner and also assumes the role of the shadow Minister for the Presidency and Security, along with Deputy Chief Whip.

Following the announcement, Mpuuga emphasized that the party’s journey is about improving Uganda, urging support for the new parliamentary leader. Ssenyonyi, expressing humility, thanked the party for the appointment and pledged to fulfill his responsibilities, highlighting collaboration within the opposition.
