David Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General of the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), solemnly announced the tragic demise of Lochoto Ambrose Machete, a fellow comrade and head of NUP mobilization in Kaabong District, Karamoja Sub-region. Machete was laid to rest after being brutally murdered by security operatives on Saturday night.
The manner of Machete’s death was described as gruesome, with his body riddled with bullets from head to toe. Witnesses attest that he was pursued, apprehended, and then subjected to a fatal point-blank shooting after being ordered to remove his shirt and sit down. Prior to this tragic incident, Machete was not only a political mobilizer but also a musician.
Despite efforts by Machete’s family to seek justice by reporting the case to the police and recording a statement, they were allegedly chased away. Furthermore, when Machete’s body was brought to Kaabong General Hospital, authorities declined to conduct a postmortem examination. According to the family, no doctor was willing to perform the procedure, leaving them with no official medical report. In the midst of their grief, they were approached by local officials who purportedly claimed that Machete’s death was a mistake, leaving behind unanswered questions regarding the fate of his wife and six children.
In response to this tragic loss, Rubongoya conveyed a message of solidarity from President Bobi Wine and the entire leadership of NUP. Despite the grief and shock, he urged the community to remain resolute and unwavering in their commitment to their cause. He concluded by offering prayers for Machete’s soul to rest in peace, acknowledging the gravity of the loss to both his family and the broader opposition movement.
