NUP MP Kagabo Confirms MK Movement Subscription Ahead of 2026 Elections

Sunday, February 4, 2024

The Member of Parliament representing Bukoto South on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, Dr. Twaha Kagabo, has publicly stated his alignment with the MK Movement. He conveyed this message to his followers on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, February 3. Kagabo clarified that due to legal constraints, he cannot switch parties within 12 months of the upcoming general elections.

Responding to a follower’s inquiry about his party affiliation after engaging with leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) at State House Entebbe on February 2, Kagabo emphasized the constitutional requirement to remain with NUP until the specified time. The next general elections are scheduled for January 12 and February 9, 2026, with candidate nominations occurring between June and October 2025.

Addressing concerns about his re-election prospects in 2026, Kagabo expressed confidence, stating, “Time is the best judge.” He attended the NRM parliamentary caucus at State House, meeting President Yoweri Museveni, the national chairman of the ruling party, and shared insights from the meeting on X.

In his posts, Kagabo highlighted President Museveni’s presentation on government agency rationalization and discussed the importance of being focused, quoting a Swahili proverb. He also mentioned the President’s challenge to leaders to explore Adam Smith’s 1776 book, “The Wealth of Nations.”

Notably, Kagabo was the first opposition MP to publicly meet Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chairman of the MK Movement, on May 16, 2023. He later joined the movement, sharing positive insights with fellow NUP members. Njeru Municipality MP Jimmy Lwanga, also on the NUP ticket, followed a similar path, expressing support for Gen. Muhoozi’s political ideology in July 2023.
