Obongi, Uganda – March 10, 2025 – Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, has issued a directive to the police in Obongi, instructing them to cease granting police bond to men accused of domestic violence and defilement.

The RDC made this pronouncement during the International Women’s Day celebrations for Obongi District, held at Lionga Boma Grounds in Obongi Town Council.

Speaking forcefully, Hashaka expressed deep concern over the rising number of maternal deaths, miscarriages, and infant deaths attributed to domestic violence. He lamented that prevailing negative cultural practices often discourage reporting such cases to the police.

He cited three specific instances involving senior civil servants, including a parish chief, who allegedly assaulted their wives to the point of unconsciousness.

The RDC further highlighted the inadequacy of healthcare facilities, noting the absence of X-ray and ultrasound scan services at Obongi Health Centre IV. He also expressed alarm over the escalating rates of defilement, which he said lead to over 80% of pupils dropping out of school before completing their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) due to early marriages.

Hon. Zumura Maneno, the Woman Member of Parliament for Obongi and the chief guest at the event, thanked the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government for its efforts in women’s emancipation. She pledged to continue advocating for more developmental programs for Obongi.

Hon. Dr. George Didi Bhoka, the area Member of Parliament, congratulated the women on their day. He identified corruption as a significant challenge that must be addressed.
