The organizers of the George William Owaraga Memorial Cycling Race in Pallisa District are planning to incorporate a women’s cycling competition in the next edition of the race. The annual cycling race, which recently concluded its successful third edition, has gained popularity and recognition in just three years.

Silver Owaraga, a family member and one of the organizers, revealed that the Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) is considering using the Owaraga Cycling Race as a qualifier for major events due to its growing popularity. Additionally, the UCA is planning to organize a women-only race in the region, capitalizing on the increasing interest among female cyclists. Potential sponsors are also expressing interest in supporting the women’s competition.

The George William Owaraga Memorial Cycling Race was initiated two years ago in Bukedi, attracting elite riders from Kampala. The race has been instrumental in promoting cycling in the region and has become a significant event outside the central region of Uganda.

The organizers have also incorporated an environmental awareness aspect into the race, using it as an opportunity to campaign against the use of polythene bags in Pallisa, which is considered one of the most-littered towns in Uganda.

Silver Owaraga emphasized the importance of safety measures in cycling competitions and mentioned that the upcoming women’s race will include awareness campaigns on safety measures. The organizers are awaiting the UCA to set dates for the women’s race, aiming to further promote the sport in the region and the country at large.

The George William Owaraga Memorial Cycling Race honors the memory of George Owaraga, a former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Past President of the Rotary Club of Entebbe. George Owaraga, one of the country’s first engineers, passed away on November 1, 2020, at the age of 90.
