Nommy Otyeno, the Councilor for Kamdini Sub County in Oyam district and the District Council Speaker for Oyam District Local Government, has declared his intention to contest the position of the area MP for Oyam South in the 2026 general election.

Otyeno is currently engaged in a mobilization program with the aim of gaining more support from the local community in Oyam South County leading up to the 2026 general election.

However, the current area MP for Oyam South County, Hon. Betty Amongi, has expressed her interest in contesting for the position of Woman MP for Lira City in the 2026 general election. She is also actively mobilizing to garner support from the community.

Despite early campaigning by politicians like those mentioned, it is important to note that organizing campaigns is against the law when the Election Commission has not yet provided a roadmap for campaigning.

Recently, the Councilors of Oyam District Local Government proposed the creation of a new district, Aber, along with two sub-counties and two town councils in Oyam District. They argue that the current district is too large, and government services are not adequately benefiting communities in other sub-counties. This situation presents an opportunity for local leaders in Oyam District to prepare for potential advancement to national leadership roles.
