SOROTI, Uganda – The Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Joseph Eciru Oliach, has called on the people of Teso to pray for former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among as she faces mounting scrutiny over alleged corruption during her tenure.
Addressing hundreds of Christians at Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish in Kachumbala, Bukedea District, Bishop Eciru urged the faithful to set aside earthly distractions and prepare their souls for heaven, while keeping the embattled legislator in their prayers during what he described as a difficult time.
Among, who has served as Bukedea District’s Woman Member of Parliament since 2016, is currently under investigation over her financial dealings and alleged misconduct while leading the 11th Parliament.
The Bishop’s appeal came during this year’s diocesan celebrations — the first time the event was held at that level following the Ebola outbreak in the country.
In a significant political development, Bukedea County Member of Parliament David Beecham Okwere revealed that a delegation of Teso leaders plans to meet President Yoweri Museveni to discuss Among’s situation.
Okwere said the delegation would likely be led by Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, Bishop Eciru, and bishops from other churches across the Teso region.
“Everything will be well with our sister, Annet Anita Among,” Okwere assured the community, urging calm as leaders prepare to engage the President.
Bishop Eciru, meanwhile, used the gathering to deliver a broader spiritual message, reminding Christians of the need to prioritize their souls over worldly concerns. His remarks reflected a pastoral approach to a politically charged moment, focusing on prayer rather than judgment.
