Leaders from Gulu District expressed gratitude and showered praise on His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his remarkable leadership in transforming Uganda into a money economy and supporting numerous Ugandans through various income-generating projects. This commendation came during the Women’s Day celebrations held at Oguru Primary School in Pukony Sub-county, Gulu District.

Representing his superior at the event, Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Gulu, Cosmas James Okidi, conveyed the significance of this year’s theme, “Accelerating Gender Equality through Economic Women’s Empowerment.” He emphasized the government’s implementation of affirmative action, reserving certain political positions for women, such as District representation, to ensure their voices are heard at decision-making levels.

Economically, the government has instituted several programs including the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP), Emyooga, Grow project, and PDM, aimed at empowering women financially. “It is essential to present successful individuals or groups to share their achievements as testimonies to encourage others,” remarked DRDC Cosmas during his address at the Women’s Day celebrations.

He also highlighted the failure of both technical and political leaders in adequately sensitizing the population about these programs, which hampers government efforts to eradicate poverty at the household level.

Touching on job creation and wealth generation, DRDC Cosmas emphasized the importance of four key sectors of the economy: agriculture, industrialization, services, and ICT. He stressed that embracing these sectors wholeheartedly is crucial for socioeconomic transformation and poverty reduction in the region.
