Mwajuma Nankya, a Senior Two student, gave birth to quadruplets

(Butaleja) – Celebrations are in full swing after 16 year old Mwajuma Nankya, a Senior Two student, gave birth to quadruplets. This unexpected and miraculous event has captured the attention of the local community and beyond.

Nankya delivered her four babies on the night of Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Busolwe Hospital. However, due to the unique nature of her case, she was quickly transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further care and observation.

Despite her young age, Nankya was all smiles as she settled into the children’s ward at Mbale, her joy evident as she assisted the medical staff in caring for her newborns. Her happiness was only tempered by the shock she felt at the number of babies she had brought into the world.

“During the antenatal visits, they told me I was carrying twins. But to my surprise, when the time came, there were four babies,” Nankya shared, her voice a mix of amazement and gratitude. She expressed her belief that God had been on her side throughout her pregnancy, allowing her to deliver naturally despite the odds.

The birth of quadruplets is a rare event, and the young mother’s story has resonated deeply with many, highlighting both the joys and challenges that come with such a unique experience.

Though Nankya is thrilled by the arrival of her four babies, she is also mindful of the difficulties that lie ahead. She is determined to continue her education but acknowledges the obstacles she faces. Coming from a humble background, and with her husband having dropped out of school after Primary Seven, the young mother’s path forward is uncertain.

“I am willing to go back to school,” Nankya stated, her resolve clear. However, she is concerned about the financial burden this may place on her family, who are already struggling to make ends meet.

At Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Dr. Abeso, the head of the children’s ward, confirmed that all four babies are healthy and stable. However, she expressed concern about the challenges Nankya might face once she leaves the hospital. The doctor pointed out that the young mother might struggle to produce enough breast milk to feed all four babies, a concern that will need to be addressed to ensure the health of the newborns.

“It is important for her health that she does not get pregnant again very soon,” Dr. Abeso advised, explaining that Nankya’s body needs time to recover and develop further after carrying and delivering quadruplets.
