Security Concerns Mount for Boda-Boda Riders in Kisoro
Boda-Boda riders in Kisoro District are reportedly living in fear due to a recent increase in kidnappings by M23 rebels from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This has disrupted their daily routines.
On October 10, 2023, Kamari Fideri, a Boda-Boda rider from Kabingo Cell, Southern Ward, Chahafi Town Council, was abducted by an unknown individual who deceived him with the promise of buying a soda. Fortunately, he was released on October 24, 2023.
Abel Bizimana, the District LC5 Chairman, addressed the Boda-Boda riders at Kisoro District headquarters. He acknowledged the insecurity in the region and criticized the delayed response from the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which operates under the East African Forces.
Bizimana emphasized the need for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to implement stronger security measures for Kisoro residents, extending to their homes, in order to prevent further kidnappings.
In response to the growing threat, Bizimana advised Boda-Boda riders to consider organizing a peaceful demonstration to seek government assistance if their concerns about the increasing insecurity affecting their work and lives remain unaddressed.
