Bukwo District has made significant strides in its efforts to combat rabies, a zoonotic disease transmitted between animals and humans. The district, which experienced a surge in rabies cases between May and December 2023, has implemented various interventions to mitigate the spread of the disease and address the challenges posed by stray dogs.

One such case is that of Ms. Doreen Cheptoyek, who was bitten by a stray dog in January 2024. After the incident, Ms. Cheptoyek sought medical attention at Bukwo General Hospital, where she received treatment for potential rabies exposure. Her experience reflects the broader challenge faced by over 200 residents who were bitten by dogs in the district during the specified period.

Dr. Godfrey Barteka, the Acting District Health Officer, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that at least four patients succumbed to rabies between August and December 2023. The first recorded case occurred on August 28, 2023, prompting urgent action from health authorities.

To address the outbreak, Bukwo District implemented a series of interventions, including surveillance, community sensitization, and vaccination campaigns. Dr. Barteka emphasized the importance of collaboration with government agencies and international partners to support these initiatives effectively.

One key aspect of the intervention strategy was the activation of response teams and the mobilization of resources for vaccination efforts. Additionally, measures were taken to address the root causes of the outbreak, such as stray dogs and wildlife interactions.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain, including logistical constraints and limited access to vaccines for both humans and animals. The high cost of vaccines in private clinics further exacerbated the situation, hindering victims’ ability to seek timely treatment.

Nevertheless, progress has been made in controlling the spread of rabies, with surveillance teams closely monitoring affected areas and providing support to affected communities. Through collaborative efforts and sustained advocacy, Bukwo District aims to further reduce the incidence of rabies and protect the health and well-being of its residents.
