(Kitgum) – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) foiled an attempted cattle theft in the early hours of today, recovering stolen livestock and neutralizing one suspect in a swift operation.
At around 2:00 a.m., the UPDF’s 75 Infantry Battalion from the 505 Infantry Brigade launched a targeted operation in Akilok South Village, located in Okuti Parish, Orom East Sub-County, Chua County. The mission intercepted two armed Jie warriors accused of stealing two cows from Mr. Otema Bosco, a local resident. During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized, and the stolen livestock returned to its rightful owner.
Colonel Patrick Opira, Commander of the 505 Infantry Brigade, commended his troops for their rapid response, emphasizing the military’s commitment to protecting the community. “The UPDF remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of people and their property,” Col Opira said. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
This successful operation builds on a series of recent efforts by the UPDF to tackle livestock theft in the region. Earlier this month, security forces recovered 98 goats and 13 cows stolen by raiders, returning all animals to their owners. The continued operations underscore the UPDF’s resolve to maintain peace and stability in Kitgum and surrounding areas.
Col Opira reaffirmed that cattle raiders would be held accountable under Ugandan law, urging the local community to cooperate with security forces to deter criminal activities. The UPDF’s efforts have reinforced public confidence in their ability to safeguard the livelihoods of residents in northern Uganda.
