Three civil servants of Kabale district local government, namely Vianney Besigomwe (Maziba Sub County Chief), James Magezi (Sub County Cashier), and Loyce Asiimwe (District Clerk to Council), have pledged to refund 42.94 million Shillings. This sum, allocated under the District Development Equalization Grant (DDEG), was intended for road rehabilitation projects in Maziba Sub County during the financial years 2020/2021 to 2023/2024.
Despite the funds being disbursed, no road works were undertaken, and the money was not deposited into the sub-county bank account. The affected roads include those from Nyanja Trading Centre to Kiziba A-Kiziba B-Kabimbi-Bweyo, Ikona-Munkirp primary school, Nyakasa-Kagona, Kaburasi-Rwemihanga-Kanoni, and Eiziniro-Mukashenyi-Birambo-Karweru.
In a letter dated February 8, 2024, Besigwomwe, Magezi, and Asiimwe committed to repaying the funds within two months. They also pledged to ensure that the refunded money is used for the intended purpose of road rehabilitation within the same timeframe.
Godfrey Nyakahuma, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, warned that failure to repay the misappropriated funds would result in legal action against the accused. This latest incident comes after the three were recently implicated in another corruption scandal involving the embezzlement of funds allocated for road rehabilitation in Maziba Sub County, as well as the misappropriation of funds meant for the renovation of Kyanamira sub-county council hall.
