Energy Waste: 75 Megawatts Unused in Gulu Substation, UETCL Reveals

According to reports from the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), there is currently an idle capacity of 75 megawatts at the 132KV Gulu Substation. This substation is situated in Koro Abili, Koro Sub County, within the Omoro District.

Of the total 80 megawatts of electricity generated at the Gulu Substation, only a small fraction, specifically 5 megawatts, is being utilized by Gulu City. This leaves a significant surplus of 75 megawatts unused.

The presence of such a substantial amount of idle power raises concerns about efficiency and resource management within the energy sector. It suggests that there may be challenges in matching electricity supply with local demand, leading to wastage of valuable resources.

The Gulu Substation plays a crucial role in the regional power grid, serving as a hub for transmitting electricity to various areas within Gulu City and its surrounding regions. However, the underutilization of its capacity indicates a disconnect between power generation and consumption patterns.

Efforts should be made to address this discrepancy and ensure that the generated electricity is effectively utilized to meet the needs of communities in Gulu and beyond.
