Kabale District Faces Renewed Covid-19 Threat: Two Lives Lost, Vigilance Urged

Sunday, February 4, 2024

Two lives have been lost due to Covid-19 in Kabale District, raising worries about a resurgence of the virus. The deaths occurred at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital on January 17, 2024. With over 20 confirmed cases in January, there is growing concern about a decline in public vigilance against the ongoing pandemic.

To address the resurgence, authorities have reinstated preventive measures, such as mask-wearing, frequent handwashing, and avoiding crowded places. Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng issued a stern warning, urging Ugandans to follow guidelines.

The deceased were among patients admitted in the early weeks of last month. According to Mr. Ronald Bakak, Kabale District Deputy Resident District Commissioner, delayed treatment contributed to the unfortunate outcomes. He emphasized the importance of prompt medical attention for Covid-19 cases.

Mr. Bakak highlighted that current Covid-19 cases are being managed at the hospital. Testing suspects promptly is now a priority. If confirmed positive, immediate admission and treatment follow. The district aims to treat Covid-19 like any other disease, reassuring the community not to panic.

Nelson Nsangabasheija, Kabale District Chairman, attributed the new cases to public reluctance in observing preventative measures. He urged the public to maintain social distance, wash hands regularly, and wear face masks, emphasizing the need for vigilance against the virus.

Dr. Aceng reiterated the importance of following guidelines to avoid infection. She encouraged the public to wear masks, practice hand hygiene, and avoid large crowds. Vaccines remain available, and she urged people to get vaccinated at nearby facilities.

While the World Health Organization declared the end of the global health emergency for Covid-19 on May 5, 2023, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that the virus remains a global health threat. Countries are transitioning from emergency mode to managing Covid-19 alongside other infectious diseases. As of November 2023, 72% of people worldwide had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, preventing severe illness and hospitalizations for millions.
