Tensions between top leaders within the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Masaka, have led to accusations and counter-accusations, raising speculation about potential external influences, particularly from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The rift, prominently involving Mathias Mpuuga and Florence Namayanja, has escalated, with both figures blaming each other for allegedly undermining the party’s interests.
Political observers, including Prof. Gerald Karyeija, have shared their insights, suggesting that the NRM might be covertly fanning the flames of discord to take advantage of the internal turmoil.
Prof. Karyeija remarked, “You cannot dismiss the possibility of NRM sponsoring the rift. After NRM’s embarrassing defeat in the recent general elections, the party must be observing the situation with satisfaction.”
Masaka, traditionally a stronghold of the Democratic Party (DP), has witnessed a diminishing political influence of the ruling party in recent years.
Analysts argue that exploiting internal divisions within the opposition could offer a strategic opportunity for the NRM to regain lost political ground.
Prof. Karyeija highlighted the timing and intensity of the discord as potentially suggestive of external interference, emphasizing the vulnerability of the NUP to manipulation amidst internal tensions.
