The Chairperson of St. Immaculate Women’s Saving Group – Asingei in Akoboi Sub-county, Ms. Jessica Catherine Opus, yesterday, June 25th, 2024, applauded the State Minister for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, for his significant impact in empowering women’s lives through support for successful saving groups in his constituency.
Opus made these remarks while receiving a two million shillings financial boost from the Ngariam County MP. Over seventy VSLAs (Village Savings and Loan Associations) members gathered to distribute their savings accumulated over time.
Upon receiving the financial support, the members expressed gratitude to their area legislator for donating ten goats to ten families in their village, which eventually multiplied to over six cows.
They added, “Through Ogwang’s support, each family has managed to acquire all essential household items such as mattresses, plates, saucepans, and more.”
Area Councillor for Okokoma, Emanuel Otoke, and Asha Akiteng, a councilor for Katakwi Town Council, along with other local leaders, emphasized the importance of having committed leaders who fulfill public demands.
“These women received these goats because of us, good leaders. Now, they are well-kept and have multiplied into cows. I thank the able leadership of Ogwang,” said Otoke Emmanuel.
Hon. Jorem Obukui, the LC3 Chairperson for Akoboi, urged the public to continue participating in saving groups, noting that his team is conducting assessments across the county to monitor the progress of Ogwang’s initiatives, with plans to allocate funds to those performing well.
“Leaders are chosen by God, and that’s why Minister Ogwang is here doing tremendous work,” noted Obukui.
Meanwhile, Joseph Okwakol, representative of the Ngariam County MP, stated that the government is committed to solving people’s problems but urged the public to be organized.
Okwakol praised Ogwang for demonstrating leadership maturity and advocating for marginalized communities, showing that they too can thrive when represented and supported.
Minister Ogwang recently injected 771 million shillings as a personal initiative to empower over 257 VSLAs, comprising more than seven thousand members across Ngariam County.
This initiative has enabled women-led groups to access affordable loans internally, promoting financial inclusion and economic growth within the community.
