Rukungiri district authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a tragic incident in which a young primary school pupil lost her life during her journey back home in the evening.
The incident took place in Omukashanda village, Ruyonza parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district. The victim, identified as 9-year-old Owomuhendo Maria, was a student at St. Andrew’s Primary School in Nyarushanje and a resident of Omukashanda village.
According to Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, the unfortunate event occurred on the 13th of October 2023, at around 5:00 PM. Maria, along with two other pupils, was being transported on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number UEB 887J while heading home from school. Tragedy unfolded as the motorcycle attempted to overtake a Fuso Fighter motor vehicle with registration number UBJ 619J (a tipper).
During the overtaking attempt, they collided with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
Maate explained that the collision resulted in Maria being thrown from the motorcycle, leading to her immediate and tragic demise. Following the incident, officers from Rubabo police post visited the accident scene.
Maria’s body was later taken to Kisiizi Hospital for a postmortem examination. Both involved motor vehicles were impounded at Rubabo police post, awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). The individuals responsible for the collision are currently at large, but ongoing efforts are being made to apprehend them.
