The National Unity Platform (NUP) party has commenced a significant nationwide membership registration initiative at its headquarters in Makerere, Kavule. This drive aims to enlist supporters of the party into the national register.
The launch event was presided over by the party president, H.E Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, popularly known as Bobi Wine. The occasion saw the gathering of district registrars, members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), Members of Parliament, and other party leaders.
During the launch, President Bobi Wine emphasized the importance of integrity and trust among registrars, urging them to avoid engaging in corrupt practices. He officially inaugurated the nationwide membership registration drive and encouraged registrars to fully embrace the initiative, stating, “I hereby launch the nationwide membership registration drive, and let’s get to work.”
As part of the demonstration of the launch, President Bobi Wine ceremonially signed a newly redesigned party membership card, featuring the updated address of Makerere Kavule, marking a departure from the previous location in Kamwokya.
Several key party leaders addressed the attendees, including President Bobi Wine, Treasurer Counsel Benjamin Katana, Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Mobilization Secretary Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu, and Leader of the Opposition Rt. Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi.
Treasurer Benjamin Katana emphasized the importance of humility among NUP members and highlighted the principle of unity within the party. He stressed that membership would be determined by registration in the national register rather than popularity. Additionally, he announced that party membership cards would be available for purchase at an affordable price of UGX 1,000, with proceeds going back to the party Secretariat.
Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya outlined the purpose of the membership registration drive, emphasizing its role in facilitating internal party democracy. He also announced the launch of a roadmap to guide the formation of party structures at various levels across the country.
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi urged registrars to uphold exemplary leadership and serve as ambassadors for the party. He emphasized the importance of integrity, discipline, and active engagement within their communities, cautioning against being compromised by external influences.
The two-day event concluded with a luncheon for all attendees, who then returned to their respective jurisdictions. President Bobi Wine expressed gratitude to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Africa for their support in facilitating the event.
