Masaka City, Uganda – On Sunday, March 30, 2025, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda, convened at Zebra Hotel in Masaka City, elected Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza as the 3rd Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese, succeeding Bishop George William Kasangaki.
According to the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, Bishop-elect Kugonza will be consecrated and enthroned as the 3rd Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese on August 3, 2025, at St. Matthew’s Cathedral Masindi.
Background on Bishop-elect Kugonza:
Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza was born on October 7, 1976, in Kiryandongo District. He gave his life to Christ on September 13, 1989, at Alwala Church of Uganda in Apac District, within the West Lango Diocese. He was ordained a Deacon on January 3, 2010, and Priested on December 14, 2010, at St. Matthew’s Cathedral Masindi.
Currently, Rev. Canon Kugonza serves as the Canon of St. Matthew’s Cathedral Masindi. He is married to Proscovia Allen Kugonza, and together they have been blessed with four children.
Rev. Canon Kugonza is also serving as the Diocesan Secretary of Masindi Kitara Diocese, a role he has held since 2021. He previously served in various capacities, including as a Parish Priest, Project Officer with Samaritan’s Purse, Headteacher, and Teacher at Kigumba Intensive Primary School.
Educational and Professional Background:
Bishop-elect Kugonza holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity from Uganda Christian University and a Diploma in Education from National Teachers College Ngetta in Lira District. He has also undertaken several other professional courses throughout his career.
