Security agencies have announced stringent measures, including the prohibition of motorcycles along the summit route from Entebbe Airport to Speke Resort Munyonyo in anticipation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit hosted by Uganda from January 15, 2024, to January 20, 2024.
Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, clarified that specific boda boda stages along the summit routes and hotels where visiting heads of states will be residing have been relocated. During the summit period, these stages will be absorbed into alternative locations to ensure smooth operations.
The summit, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, will be followed by the Third South Summits (G77) under the theme ‘Leaving No One Behind.’
Police, welcoming the delegates to the Pearl of Africa on Sunday, assured them that there were no specific threats directed towards the Summit. A statement released by the police emphasized their collaboration with organizers to implement appropriate safety and policing plans. Delegates were encouraged to interact and cooperate with security teams, especially at check and search points, while obtaining security updates from them.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a forum comprising 120 countries not formally aligned with any major power bloc, was established to advance the interests of developing countries during the Cold War. It stands as the second-largest grouping of states worldwide after the United Nations.
