On May 27, 2024, the Uganda Police Force met with leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) at Police Headquarters in Naguru. This meeting was in response to a letter from NUP, dated May 23, 2024, which protested against alleged police and military brutality and the obstruction of their activities on May 22, 2024.
During the meeting, both parties agreed on several important points to improve communication and cooperation:
- Official Notifications: The NUP leadership must send official notifications to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) well in advance, as required by law. This allows the Uganda Police Force (UPF) enough time to respond. Copies of these notifications should also be sent to the Territorial Commanders.
- Security Assessments: Before any NUP meetings, the District Security Committee will assess the security of the venue, surrounding areas, and the routes that NUP members plan to use. This assessment will be coordinated with town clerks who grant permission for venue usage. The committee will work with an NUP Liaison Officer to agree on a suitable venue where the police can provide effective security.
- Liaison Officer: The NUP will appoint a liaison officer to coordinate with the Police Headquarters and Unit Commanders. This officer will help with preparations for NUP activities and address any security concerns from the party.
- Military Insignia: The meeting emphasized that NUP leaders should ensure their members do not wear military insignia, as this is against the law. Individuals who break this law will be dealt with individually.
- Confiscated Items: Regarding NUP items allegedly confiscated by security, it was agreed that the Director of Operations will follow up on this matter. Further communication will be made later.
- Arrested Members: For NUP members arrested for breaking the law, the meeting agreed that the NUP Liaison Officer should always contact the police for follow-up.
