Security has been heightened across the country in preparation for the Christmas festivities, as reported by the New Vision official. To ensure the safety of the public, the police have deployed an increased number of personnel and implemented various measures.

According to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the heightened security includes increased visibility, road policing measures such as snap checks and stop-and-search operations. Enanga emphasized that these measures are only a small part of the comprehensive security plan. Joint intelligence components have profiled major installations, venues, and potential hotspots, with standby teams, mobile squads, advance teams, 999 patrol, and motorcycle squads already in place.

Enanga made these remarks during the weekly joint security briefing on December 18, 2023, at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala. Despite acknowledging the existence of a threat environment, Enanga assured the public that the police have taken necessary precautions to dissolve potential threats that could disrupt the Christmas celebrations.

“We are continuously reviewing our level of preparedness and assessing all threats and vulnerabilities in the countdown to Christmas and the New Year,” said Enanga.

To enhance security measures, the police have deployed a combination of CCTV technology capturing vehicle number plates and driver images. Enanga encouraged private CCTV camera owners to promptly alert the police of any potential danger and share recorded footage.

Enanga also called upon the public to collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure a successful festive season. There have been signs of increased criminal activities in various parts of the country as criminals prepare for the festivities. A recent example is the Monday night attack in Rukungiri, where assailants suspected to be Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels killed 10 residents in a fatal criminal activity.
