US Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, affirmed the United States’ dedication to aiding Uganda in its struggle against terrorism during a media briefing while on a two-day visit to Mbarara. Mr. Popp highlighted the global susceptibility to terrorism and stressed the necessity for united efforts to combat it.

Mr. Popp remarked, “Terrorism has repeatedly demonstrated that no nation is immune to such attacks. Just last month, we commemorated the anniversary of September 11, the largest terrorist attack on US soil. Terrorism can strike anywhere at any time.”

He further emphasized the importance of international cooperation and vigilance in the face of terrorism to prevent the loss of human lives. He also expressed condolences for the recent attack on tourists in Queen Elizabeth National Park and urged governments worldwide to collaborate in eradicating terrorism.

Regarding security challenges at Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Popp stated that while the US had not received specific requests from the Ugandan government, they were prepared to work with Ugandan authorities to enhance security in these regions.

Mr. Popp affirmed the US’s commitment to assisting all countries in countering the threat of terrorism. He praised Uganda’s partnership in the fight against terrorism, particularly their support for security in Somalia.

“Currently, we primarily focus on providing training to bolster Uganda’s presence in Somalia, a commitment we have maintained for several years. Uganda has been a significant contributor to security efforts in Somalia and combating terrorism in the region,” Mr. Popp concluded.
