Shock as Ssegirinya’s Widow Dumps NUP and Luwemba for NRM in Kawempe North by election

Officials and supporters of the National Unity Platform are still reeling from the news that Mariam Nakabuye, known as “Maama Nagirinya,” the widow of the late Kawempe North legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya, has officially aligned herself with the National Resistance Movement despite candidate Nalukoola offering her a lucrative position and financial support.

Nakabuye has accused the National Unity Platform of neglecting Ssegirinya’s family and choosing lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola over the successor preferred by the late legislator.

She asserted that Ssegirinya and her mother, Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, had backed his political assistant, Alex Luswa Luwemba, to take over his role, yet Bobi Wine awarded the nomination to veteran singer-turned-lawyer Nalukoola, a long-time friend who was recently a legal advisor for the Democratic Party.

It remains unclear why she chose not to support Luswa Luwemba, who is also running as an Independent candidate in the upcoming election. The campaigning has already become intense, particularly between security personnel and NUP supporters. Faridah Nambi is the NRM’s ofifcial flag bearer in this election.

The election is scheduled for March 13, with NUP’s Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi being seen as the frontrunner. However, there are concerns that the vote may be fragmented among different candidates who have ties to NUP but decided to run as Independents after being denied the party nomination.
