A UPDF soldier in Nakapiripirit District, Karamoja sub-region is under investigation for shooting dead 18 cows and injuring 25 others on September 17th. The incident took place at Moruita-protected kraal, where Private Yosefi Baguma was assigned to graze the impounded cows.
Security impounded the animals in response to the killing of one soldier and the injury of two others in August 2023. The cows were earmarked to compensate the victims of the raids.
Maj. Moses Amuya, the acting UPDF 3rd division spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said that the suspect is presently in custody at the 407 Brigade headquarters. He explained that preliminary investigations suggest that Baguma may have been suffering from severe mental disturbance, and he will undergo a thorough medical examination to determine the underlying cause.
Amuya appealed to the local community to remain calm and patient as they investigate the matter comprehensively to take appropriate further action.
Military Regrets Misconduct
The military has expressed deep regret for the misconduct exhibited by Baguma. Amuya said that the cows were earmarked to compensate the victims of the raids, and the military is committed to doing everything possible to make things right.
Progress in Ongoing Operation
Amuya also highlighted the progress made in the ongoing operation against the criminals responsible for the soldiers’ killings in August. Three guns were recovered, seven suspects have been arrested pending prosecution procedures, and 38 exhibit cows were successfully recovered during these operations.
