Oyam, Uganda – Thousands of voters in Oyam South were left in tears, overwhelmed with emotions and concerns, as they heard a farewell message from the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, on Friday. The voters expressed their appreciation by gifting the minister various items, including sheep, goats, chickens, brooms, winowers, and foodstuffs, as she bid them farewell.
Hon. Betty Amongi Akena began her farewell tour to the people of Oyam South on January 3, 2025, starting from Aber Sub-county. Several aspiring candidates for Oyam Constituency joined her during her tour of the four venues she visited that day. In her speech to the voters, the Minister thanked the people of Oyam, including her birthplace, for educating her, mentoring her, trusting her, and giving her the opportunity to serve them for five terms. She emphasized the strong support she received in every election, with over 60% of the total votes each time.
Explaining why she is leaving Oyam South to contest in Lira City, voters wished her well and gifted her with various items, such as sheep, goats, chickens, brooms, winowers, and local foodstuffs.
Hon. Betty Amongi’s Achievements in Oyam South
In an extensive interview with The Ankole Times, Hon. Betty Amongi highlighted her key achievements in Aber Sub-county. These include:
- Contributing to the rehabilitation of roads.
- Lobbying for the extension of power lines through Aber to Atura.
- Securing funding for a major project for the Aber Commercial Cooperative Society, which included the construction of a warehouse, the provision of a power transformer, and a tractor.
- Supporting pregnant women by covering the cost of all C-section deliveries for the last seven years.
- Providing solar power to families.
- Sponsoring over 20 best-performing students in her school up to “O” level.

Land Justice Contributions
In terms of land justice, Hon. Betty Amongi implemented the SLAAC Program across the entire Oyam South. The first batch of beneficiaries received their land titles during a ceremony at Apworo Ocero Primary School, presided over by the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooba.
Farewell Tour Continues
Hon. Minister Betty Amongi Akena’s farewell tour continues from January 3, 2025, through January 9, 2025. The tour aims to thank the people of Oyam South, who have consistently supported her in every election cycle since 2001. This tour serves as a reflection on Hon. Betty Amongi’s tireless efforts to drive socio-economic development in Oyam South before she moves on to contest for Lira City in the 2026 elections.
As she concludes her service to the people of Oyam South and prepares to take on the new challenge of representing Lira City, Betty Amongi Akena’s work in Oyam South has made a lasting impact on the lives of the people, as seen in the outpouring of love and support during this farewell tour.
