Joseph Cwinyaai, Andrew Sekibejja, and Godfrey Nsubuga are poised to represent Uganda at the highly anticipated Africa Amateur Golf Championship, set to take place from February 21st to 24th at Leopard Creek Country Club in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the tournament, Cwinyaai stated, “I am looking forward to the tournament and rubbing shoulders and playing with Africa’s elite golfers.” He emphasized the importance of the experience and expressed hope for a successful outcome.
The trio of senior amateurs will join a competitive field of over 72 amateur golfers from across Africa in this prestigious event organized by the Royal and Ancient, the governing body of golf worldwide.
All eyes will be on Nsubuga, given his remarkable performance in the previous season. With victories at the Uganda Open, Tanzania Open, Tea Fields Trophy, and the Nyali Open, Nsubuga has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the golfing world. Additionally, he is currently pursuing a golf scholarship in the United States, further highlighting his dedication to the sport.
Sekibejja, who clinched the title at the 2022 Uganda Open, also brings a wealth of experience to the tournament. His recent participation in the Victoria Cup showcased his talent, despite Uganda narrowly losing to Kenya at the Uganda Golf Club.
The picturesque Leopard Creek Country Club, nestled against the backdrop of the Kruger National Park, sets the stage for this inaugural championship. With golfers representing 24 African nations, the event promises to be a showcase of the region’s rising talent and competitive spirit.
In addition to the prestige of competing in the championship, the winner will earn coveted spots in prestigious tournaments such as the 152nd Open at Royal Troon, the Amateur Championship, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions.
Phil Anderton, Chief Development Officer at the Royal and Ancient, underscored the organization’s commitment to nurturing talent and elevating the standard of amateur golf in the region. The creation of the Africa Amateur Championship and the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational reflects this dedication to providing a platform for aspiring golfers to showcase their skills on a global stage.
