AMOLATAR – An 18-year-old fisherman drowned on Sunday night after a small boat capsized during a sudden storm on Lake Kyoga, police have confirmed.

The body of Ogwal Bruno, a resident of Awelober Village in Namasale Sub-county, Amolatar District, has not yet been recovered. The incident occurred at about 9:00 pm on April 13, 2026, near Ober Okaa Village.

According to a statement released by Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region, SP P.J. Okema, the deceased had gone fishing earlier that day with a companion, Okwara Samuel, 23, using a small boat and illegal fishing gear.

At around 9:00 pm, strong winds swept across the lake, causing water to splash into the vessel. As the boat began to sink, both men jumped overboard and struggled to swim to safety. While Okwara managed to escape, Ogwal drowned.

The incident was reported the following morning, April 14, at 8:42 am by Opio Charles, 58, a resident of the same area.

Police at Namasale Sub-county have registered a case of drowning, visited the scene, and launched investigations. Efforts to retrieve the body are ongoing.

Authorities say they are awaiting the arrival of the deceased’s relatives from Lira District, where Ogwal originally came from Abei Village in Agali Sub-county. He had been living with his grandparents in Namasale at the time of his death.
