Tensions Rise as Lango War Claimants Plan Massive Protest Over Cattle Fund Mismanagement

Lango War Claimants Set to Hold a Peaceful Demonstration on Cattle Compensation on 22nd September, 2025

LIRA, Uganda – Lango war claimants are set to hold a peaceful demonstration in thousands in Lira City on Monday, 22nd September 2025, to express their grievance over their exclusion from the list of 20 delegates who are supposed to meet H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda soon.

In a media statement issued in a letter dated 17th September 2025, signed by Fred Apita Mike, Chairman LAWARA Lango sub-region, Obua Sam, the Regional Coordinator Lango Sub-region, and Etum Dickens, Regional Chairman of war claimants in the Lango sub-region, they issued a joint statement that they “will vote for opposition members of parliament exactly the way it happened in the year 2016, hence history repeating itself in 2026 general elections in the Lango sub-region.”

Their main reason to demonstrate is to hold the Office of the Attorney General responsible for the mess in data cards, corruption in the disbursed funds, and lack of transparency of their leaders to meet H.E. over the matter. The court decree pertaining to cattle compensation and the upcoming issue of cattle restocking has all been politicized by some high-ranking leaders in Lango.

By the copy of their letter obtained by The Ankole Times publication, they have invited Senior Presidential Advisor Moses Byaruhanga, Gen. Salim Saleh, and Won Nyaci Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune to be present and share with them the trial moment.

By copy of their press statement, police have been requested to provide them with adequate security on the 22nd day of September 2025 as they demonstrate peacefully from Lango Cultural Centre, via Uhuru Bar, Obote Avenue to Old Akii-Bua Stadium.

The letter has also been copied to: IGP, RPC North Kyoga Region, all RDCs, RISO Lango sub-region, all DPCs, all DISOs in Lango, among others.

Mike Apita said as Chairman LAWARA he was blocked three times from accessing the microphone in Lango College on the 17th August 2025. They will vote for Museveni but not those blocking them from accessing H.E. the President.

If the number of war claimants ranging from 60–100 have been blocked from accessing the President, they will vote only for Museveni and revenge by not voting for all the MPs who have become roadblocks, including those behind the move of generating a list or names of 20 people who are not the will of the people of Lango sub-region.

On the 14th September 2025, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua GCW, MP Acon Julius of Otuke East County, and Hon. Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti appeared on the three prominent radio stations of Lango hosted jointly by the radio management on the way forward as per the issues concerning cattle compensation.

Further attempt to talk to Hon. Denis Hamson Obua on Wednesday at 5:45 PM was unsuccessful, as his known telephone number was unavailable by press time.

The LCV Chairman of Alebtong District, Hon. Odongo DK, who doubles as the Chairperson of all the LCV Chairpersons and Mayors’ Forum in Lango, told the media at Margarita Hotel on Tuesday, 16th September 2025 in the morning, that “he is totally disappointed with the manner in which the list of the 20 delegates or committee were generated,” saying the issue about Lango war claimants’ compensation is a sensitive matter if it comes to election period.

He accused some leaders in Lango of sidelining the local government in the list selection, adding that it was totally uncalled for to be politicized since even the real claimants were left out.
