Kisoro, Uganda – Tensions have erupted at the Chanika border following serious allegations by boda boda operators, who accuse security personnel of escalating harassment and unlawful arrests, claims they say are severely hindering their ability to work effectively.

According to the operators, multiple arrests have been carried out without clear justification, particularly targeting riders picking up passengers crossing between Uganda and the Republic of Rwanda. The situation has caused growing frustration within the boda boda community.

Sebigoli William, a 56-year-old boda boda rider and stage vocalist, told journalists that the harassment has become routine. He accused security personnel of unjustly arresting riders, confiscating motorcycles, and imposing fines without proper cause—actions he strongly condemned.

“This mistreatment is endangering our livelihoods. Many of us live hand-to-mouth, and having our bikes taken or being forced to pay unfair fines affects our families,” Sebigoli lamented.

In response, Batamukoraho Baker, General Secretary of the Kisoro United Boda Boda Operators (KUBO), urged fellow riders to respect existing security rules and regulations, calling them essential for maintaining order and professionalism in the sector.

He also emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration between boda boda operators and security agencies, stressing that a conducive and safe working environment benefits all parties.

Meanwhile, Kisoro Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Hajji Badru Sebyala, advised boda boda riders to avoid direct confrontations with security personnel. He encouraged them to channel their grievances through his office, assuring them that, as the head of security in the district, he is open to hearing and addressing their concerns.
