Alcohol Shortage Affects Tourism in Zanzibar

Zanzibar, renowned for its spice islands and sandy beaches, faces an alcohol shortage, impacting its vital tourism sector. Tourism contributes approximately 90% of the archipelago’s foreign revenue. Beer prices have surged nearly 100% due to disruptions in the supply chain caused by a sudden change of importers. The islands’ tourism minister recently resigned, citing poor work conditions, though some speculate it’s linked to the alcohol supply issue.

Zanzibar, celebrated for its beaches and cultural heritage, is ranked among Africa’s top travel destinations. However, hoteliers warn that the alcohol supply problem could diminish its appeal to tourists. Some areas, like Matemwa beaches, are experiencing shortages, compelling patrons to travel to Stone Town for alcohol.

Local alcohol production is prohibited in Zanzibar due to its predominantly Muslim population. Most alcohol is either sourced from mainland Tanzania or imported from South Africa. The shortage began when permits for established importers were delayed, while new companies struggled to meet demand amid a lengthy vetting process.

Reports indicate that over 3,000 jobs could be jeopardized if the situation persists. Former tourism minister Simai Mohammed Said resigned, citing unfavorable working conditions, with some linking it to the alcohol shortage controversy. President Hussein Mwinyi implied a conflict of interest regarding Said’s relative’s involvement in a company whose license was not renewed.

The crisis unfolds as Zanzibar experiences a surge in tourist arrivals, with a notable increase in visitors from India and Russia.
