A campaign to promote tourism in Uganda’s Bunyoro sub-region is currently underway. The Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the government, will officially commence this 10-day campaign on Thursday.

According to (Rtd) Col. Tom Butime, the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, the aim of this campaign is to unlock the tourism potential in Bunyoro. It coincides with the commemoration of International Tourism Day, which took place in Hoima on September 27, 2023.

Bunyoro boasts numerous tourism attractions, and the ministry is collaborating with various stakeholders to encourage exploration of these sites. International Tourism Day celebrations included a conference for tourism stakeholders in Hoima, exhibitions, visits to completed projects, the launch of the Hoima City carnival (supported by UNDP), a Wildlife Conservation competition, and contests in art, creative writing, and essay writing, among other activities.

During their visit to Bunyoro, guests will tour Kibiro hot springs, salt mines, Kigorobya Primary School for corporate social responsibility, Mparo tombs, Bwendero Agro-Tourism Farm, Itohya Forest, and Butiaba Port, as well as enjoy the scenic views of Butiaba Escarpment and the rift valley in Bulisa, with a stopover at Murchison Falls National Park.

Minister Butime expressed confidence that this campaign will help people discover Bunyoro’s tourism potential, ensuring that all sites, including the royal palace (Karuzika) in Hoima City, are explored.

Bunyoro sub-region in Western Uganda comprises the following districts: Hoima, Kagadi, Kakumiro, Kibaale, Kikuube, Kiryandongo, and Masindi.

Uganda is recognized as one of the world’s biodiversity-rich countries, home to nearly half of the remaining mountain gorilla population, a diverse array of bird species, a significant mammal diversity, various amphibians, reptiles, and a wide variety of butterflies.
