Construction of the Busega-Mpigi Expressway, a critical infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic and facilitating trade, has reached 43.55% completion. This update was shared by the Ministry of Works and Transport on Friday, October 4th, following an inspection tour by General Edward Wamala Katumba, who engaged with contractors on-site.

The 23.7-kilometer expressway, which began construction in December 2020, is expected to be fully completed by August 2027. The dual-carriage expressway will feature four lanes, four interchanges, 13 bridges, and four toll plazas. Additionally, 21 kilometers of link roads are being constructed to connect key areas, such as the Northern Bypass, Entebbe Expressway, and Mityana Road.

The expressway is part of efforts to reduce congestion on the Kampala-Masaka road and improve traffic flow on the Masaka Highway. It is also expected to boost trade and logistics on the Northern Corridor, which connects Uganda to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

During his visit, General Katumba Wamala expressed optimism about the project’s progress. He highlighted the benefits the new road would bring to Uganda’s economy, particularly in facilitating faster and smoother transportation of goods and people. The Ministry’s post on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that work is progressing steadily.

The expressway will begin in Busega, tracing the northern side of the Kampala-Masaka road, and end in Mpigi town. The project is being carried out by a consortium of Chinese firms, led by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Once completed, the road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Kampala and Mpigi, while the interchanges and link roads will provide easier access to other critical routes.

This large-scale infrastructure project is part of Uganda’s broader efforts to modernize its road network and boost economic growth through improved transportation and trade routes.

The expressway was commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in December 2020. According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, this road will play a vital role in reducing traffic congestion, especially on the busy Masaka Highway, and will enhance access to major trade routes, including those leading to Rwanda and the DRC.

The road’s strategic importance, particularly its link to the Northern Corridor, will bolster Uganda’s standing as a key transit hub in East Africa, further facilitating trade and economic development across the region.
