Chinese engineers have landed in Uganda to facilitate training for Ugandan drivers responsible for maintaining and operating the 140 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) generously provided by China. The vehicles are earmarked for use during the upcoming 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit and the Group of 77 (G77)+China event scheduled in Kampala later this month.

Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, announced the collaboration on social media, stating that the experts from China arrived on Wednesday and are working closely with Ugandan engineers to ensure the proper training of drivers. The objective is to guarantee the smooth operation and upkeep of the vehicles during the international summits.

China’s donation of the SUVs is seen as a significant contribution to the logistical preparations for the NAM summit and the G77+China event. These conferences aim to enhance solidarity, foster development, and elevate Uganda’s influence in global affairs.

Vincent Bagiire, the Permanent Secretary of Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude to China for the vehicle donation, highlighting the longstanding collaboration between the two nations on various infrastructure projects. Bagiire mentioned the ongoing expansion of Entebbe International Airport, a project undertaken by a Chinese company, set to conclude soon.

Describing the donated Maxus D90 vehicles, Works Ministry Permanent Secretary Waiswa Bageya emphasized their advanced engineering and the crucial role they will play in transporting Very Important Persons (VIPs) during the summits. The SUVs feature a powerful two-liter turbocharged engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and advanced safety elements, ensuring secure travel for VIPs.

Additionally, Bageya highlighted the spacious interior, state-of-the-art system, and premium features such as a touch screen and charging system that showcase the vehicles’ sophistication.

In preparation for the NAM summit, head of Public Service Lucy Nakyobe inspected the readiness of the new Munyonyo Convention Centre, which will host the event from January 15-20, 2024. Serving as the CEO of the organizing committee, Nakyobe provided a briefing to government officials, including Chief of Protocol Charles Sentongo, Permanent Secretary of the Information Ministry Dr. Amina Zawedde, and Permanent Secretary of the Internal Affairs Ministry Lt. Gen. Joseph Musanyufu, to ensure a seamless and successful summit.
