Delegates in the senior officials category, set to participate in the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), began arriving in Uganda on Sunday. The event is scheduled to run from January 15 to January 23 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo. The arrivals were met with tight security measures, with military personnel and police deployed at Entebbe International Airport and throughout major routes in the city.
Journalists were restricted from accessing the airport premises due to heightened security. Coasters bearing the 19th NAM and G77+ China Summit insignias were stationed at the airport to transport the arriving delegates to their accommodations. Ugandan officials received the delegates at the improved terminal building before conveying them to designated hotels.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 delegates are expected to participate in the summit, with overall attendance projected to include 30 heads of state and government. The summit’s theme is “Deepening cooperation for shared global affluence,” and it will be followed by the G-77 plus China Summit, themed “Leaving no one behind,” from January 20 to January 23.
The 19th NAM Summit is considered one of the largest events hosted by Uganda since the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm), attended by Queen Elizabeth II and Commonwealth member countries’ delegations.
Preparations for the summit, including roadworks and landscaping on routes frequently used by guests, were underway as of Sunday, ensuring a well-organized and welcoming experience for the attending delegations.
